In the United States, where free music is often viewed as a commodity, the answer depends on the artist.
On Spotify, for example, you can pay $0.99 for songs, and artists who earn more than $10 million in annual revenue get paid more.
But Spotify also charges artists more if they’re signed to a major label.
Spotify’s free service offers a wide range of songs from artists including Beyoncé, Chance the Rapper, and Rihanna.
Spotify has also become a popular way for artists to promote their music.
“The bottom line is that Spotify gives you access to a lot of music that you probably never would have had otherwise,” said Steve DeBerg, a Spotify spokesman.
“It’s a great service for artists, and it gives them a way to make money off the music they create.”
